Cascadia CoPes Hub Project Manager Oregon State University, United States
Coastal communities face significant risk due to a multitude of hazards including sea-level rise, flooding, erosion, earthquakes and tsunamis, climate change, and human development. Each coastal community presents unique conditions, cultures, and challenges affecting their adaptive capacity and resilience. Achieving co-benefits associated with multi-hazard solutions that align with the diverse needs of coastal communities requires co-production by a broad array of stakeholders, including Tribes, community leaders, and researchers. This talk will focus on the success and challenges of the Cascadia Coastlines and People’s Hazards Research Hub- a transdisciplinary research Hub that is helping Pacific Northwest coastal communities prepare and adapt to coastal hazards through research and community engagement. The Hub’s efforts highlight interactions between natural, human-built, and social systems aimed at increasing community resilience and adaptive capacity with a focus on efforts that integrate broadening participation and/or stakeholder engagement into the research. The talk will also feature the Hub’s work on increasing the diversity of future coastal hazard researchers and practitioners, increasing information sharing between underrepresented communities, and the training of early career ocean professionals.
