FISHLUC is an initiative to synthesize the response of freshwater fish communities under land cover changes in the tropics. This initiative involves a growing network of >100 scholars from over 40 countries who are contributing field data, local knowledge, and analytic ideas. Many of us come from underrepresented backgrounds in ecology, bringing together diverse voices to bridge an important knowledge gap. We navigate and reflect on the challenges to make ecological synthesis science more inclusive: best practices to represent a full range of scholarship, tradeoffs among data accessibility and ownership, and logistics to accommodate individual needs in a collaborative project.
