Historical and contemporary ecological theory are both firmly based in consumption, like consumer-resource and predator-prey theory. These have been the dominant theories on which we base our work, but the question should be asked: is there more to ecology than consumption? In this Inspire talk, I'll try to answer this question by sharing where consumptive model-nature correspondences break down and how they have hindered theoretical development. I'll additionally propose a converse perspective by making a case for an equal and opposite perspective to consumption that instead of reducing the types and amount or resources, creates resources that facilitates biodiversity.
