New Zealand Parliamentary Commissioner for the Environment
Following the Parliamentary Commissioner for the Environment’s review of New Zealand’s weed management system, researchers, practitioners, and decision-makers agreed improvements were needed. However, challenges inhibited individual organisations from implementing the report’s recommendations. We convened a workshop to focus on short- to medium-term actions around two themes: improving information management and tackling emerging weeds. Participants identified step-change solutions and committed to follow-up actions to make progress. The workshop enabled decision-makers to hear practitioners’ shared needs and researchers’ advice on feasibility of solutions. Connecting all parties has produced a shift in perception of the review’s recommendations from ‘too challenging’ to ‘an opportunity’.
