Professor of Biology and Environmental Science Roger Williams University Bristol, RI, United States
The goal of the session is to inspire attendees to teach in ways that will welcome more students, from across majors, backgrounds, races, and other personal attributes, to appreciate and understand ecological science. We will discuss barriers to ecological competence that have been faced by some of our students. The recently developed four-dimensional ecology education framework (4DEE) will be summarized, as well as its potential to remedy some of these issues through its emphasis on interdisciplinary connections. Many opportunities exist for students from diverse backgrounds to learn ecology more effectively through connections to their health, communities, social justice and sustainability.
