Fencing is a nearly ubiquitous linear infrastructure, often invisible to most, that influences landscapes across space and time. The near invisibility of fences has resulted in their omittance when it comes to discussing the effects of anthropogenic disturbances on wildlife. Recently, the development of a new discipline called fence ecology has emerged. Fence ecology is the empirical investigation of the interactions between fences, wildlife (all organisms), ecosystems, and societal needs. Within this inspired session we will introduce you to the field of fence ecology, provide real world examples of the effects of fences on a suite of species, and finally provide examples of solutions to mitigate the effects.
