Forest fires are increasing in frequency and severity across temperate forests globally. Many of the negative impacts of forest fires have been well documented but we know much less about how fires impact bryophytes and the ecosystem functions provided by bryophytes. Bryophyte responses to fire are essential to consider because they yield insight into ecosystem functions, such as soil carbon and nutrient availability. In this talk, we will provide an overview of how forest fires impact bryophyte-mediated ecosystem functions alongside recent research that investigated the effects of fire severity on bryophyte community composition.
