Transgender, nonbinary, and gender-nonconforming scientists who do fieldwork face unique and complex challenges in their work environment. All the general safety concerns of traveling to a remote area for research are compounded by specific issues to the LGBTQ+ community, including access to relevant medical care, navigating gender-segregated dorms, and risks of discrimination and physical violence. This talk will discuss current issues and advances in supporting transgender field scientists, and highlight work done by the Trans & Gender-nonconforming Field Alliance (TGFA) in the organization’s first year of community building and resource development.
