An ecologist’s work often takes them to distant reaches of the planet. Transient or helicopter research that results in limited involvement with resident researchers should be a thing of the past. Yet despite the globe-trotting tendencies of ecological practitioners, there is still a notable lack of diversity at conferences, departments, and field stations. What are we doing wrong and how do we transform the discipline to be truly global and collaborative? We will examine how institutional norms perpetuate a system of inequity and identify actionable goals for young researchers at the helm of the tidal change in scientific attitudes.
