Long-term information about individual organisms’ life history and local neighborhood is essential in many ecological disciplines, but is typically hard to acquire. High-resolution spatial data can help fill this gap of individual-level data if it meets three requirements: individual organisms are identifiable, these individuals are relatively stationary across their life span, and data are collected repeatedly. plantTracker is an R package that takes in these types of spatial data and generates individual-level life history and local-neighborhood information. PlantTracker can be used with any data that meet the above requirements, from aerial imagery of trees to hand-drawn maps of plant basal-area.
