Effective large-scale conservation efforts require future-focused research meaningfully linked to managers and decision makers. We first developed potential national scenarios for New Zealand in 2050 drawing on future thinking about major drivers of global change including invasive species, social license, and inclusion of indigenous communities. We then convened experts across science disciplines, government and indigenous Māori groups to further develop these scenarios and explore the implications for future research and management from their diverse perspectives. We describe the process of establishing and developing scenarios, our outcomes, and discuss how scenario workshops can be used to better bridge the knowing-doing gap.
