The integration of the human-environment interaction (HEI) dimension in teaching ecology is important in successfully engaging students, especially non-majors, in learning ecology. We have developed a series of required socio-ecological systems (SES) courses that are co-taught by a social scientist and an ecologist to focus on the integration of humans in the environment and to discover the systemic connections for sustainability and equity. Here I will present our overarching SES course design as well as some successful modules and approaches that could be used in other courses seeking to include HEI in ecology teaching.
