This Inspire Session is designed to promote discussion around a critical topic in ecology and related sciences: integration and interdisciplinary connections. Specifically, our speakers will explore the opportunities and challenges that have come from navigating integration across scales, species, disciplines, and career stages within a large, multidisciplinary grant project from a student perspective. Although our speakers will highlight what we have learned so far as part of one collaborative grant in Idaho, we invite attendees to share the challenges, lessons learned, and opportunities they have identified in their own experiences with collaborative projects.
The session will begin with a brief orientation to the theme of integration and our use of landscape as an integrating concept across individual projects, followed by talks highlighting perspectives from the genomics, fisheries science, microbiology, conservation biology, ecology, and conservation social sciences work that emphasize these themes. Our speakers will highlight the intersections across projects that we have found while attempting to integrate across projects, taxa (e.g., redband trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss gairdneri) and big sagebrush (Artemisia tridentata)), disciplines, and collaborations with multiple agency and community partners. We hope that in doing so we can foster a dialogue with attendees about what it means to integrate, how we can successfully achieve integration, and the role of project members across career stages in navigating integration across multidisciplinary projects.
