FIERCE: Fueling an Innovative, Equitable and Resilient Climate-smart Economy, will tackle the largest environmental, societal, and economic challenge of the 21st century: climate change. Increasing concentrations of atmospheric greenhouse gases from a fossil fuel-based economy have caused a dangerous increase in megafires and megadroughts, impacting economies and community infrastructure. Only climate-smart solutions that reduce emissions, sequester carbon, and increase regional climate adaptation while maintaining or increasing economic output can solve these wicked problems. We also need to develop and scale robust tools for measuring, monitoring, reporting, and verifying (MMRV) their effectiveness, to ensure solutions are actually reducing atmospheric GHGs.
