For a long time, scientific institutions in the Global North have operated in a colonial scheme, resulting in persistent racial and ethnic discrimination. As we dismantle colonialism in science around the world, we want to shine light on the experiences of a historically excluded group – the Latine community. The participation of Latine ecologists is important for creating a truly inclusive scientific environment. In order to be successful, the long path to decolonization of science needs the creation of cultural safe spaces that facilitate scientific and cultural exchange between scientists. In this session, we create a welcoming and vibrant space for Latine ecologists to share their experiences and their passion for their research within the ESA community. Specifically, the speakers will discuss the influence of their cultural and geographical background in their ways to do Ecology. To our knowledge, this will be the first session at ESA where scientists are welcome to share their research in English, Spanish or Portuguese, with bilingual text in their slides. This session aims to provide the space to start a (multilingual) conversation about how the perspectives and background of Latine people actively contribute to the growth of Ecology, with a focus on global change. Simultaneously, it will provide a space for Latine scientists, acknowledging their intersectional identities, to share their unfiltered experiences in the field of ecology.< br>We would like to invite the broader ESA community to join this much needed conversation about the diversity challenges within the Latine community that extend beyond the language and cultural barriers in English speaking countries.
