Sagebrush can handle drought and heat. But recent decades have clearly shown that it can't handle cheatgrass invasion and the resulting acceleration of the fire regime. Will climate change exacerbate the annual grass - fire cycle? The Bromecast network has a plan to find out. Our approach, based on intensive common gardens experiments, models to integrate genomic, demographic, and physiological data, and distributed experiments to test model predictions, could be adapted to study impacts of climate change on other important, widespread species.
