Integration and interdisciplinary collaboration are essential to understanding and managing complex systems, from the microbiome to the biome and aquatic to terrestrial. Through the Idaho-wide GEM3 program (Genes by Environment: Modeling, Mechanisms, and Mapping), we bring diverse perspectives and represent varying career stages from several participating institutions, including three research universities: Idaho State University, Boise State University and University of Idaho. Spanning scale, species, and studies, our research covers sagebrush phenotypes, microbial communities, sagebrush steppe values and management concerns, environmental stressors facing redband trout, and student mentoring from graduate and undergraduate viewpoints.
