FT 12 - SOLD OUT - Restoration of Chicken Creek to Its Historic Alignment at the Tualatin River National Wildlife Refuge

Trip Overview
The Tualatin River National Wildlife Refuge is a 1,856 acre wetland and lowlands sanctuary near Sherwood, Oregon. Chicken Creek, a tributary of the Tualatin River and located within the Refuge, was restored to its historic orientation between 2019 and 2021. Biohabitats worked with Clean Water Services, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, Oregon Department of Fish & Wildlife, Ducks Unlimited and other project partners to help restore Chicken Creek's natural, curving flow and regenerate its stream, wetland, and floodplain functions. Chicken Creek was originally drained from its floodplain and redirected into a single straight channel to support agricultural uses of the land. This resulted in a lower water table, destroyed aquatic habitat and increased water velocity within the channel.

The restoration involved installing large, woody debris structures. This strategy mimics the way tree debris naturally enters and settles in stream and wetlands systems and will work in tandem with anticipated beaver activity. The result provides habitat for a diverse array of fish, aquatic insects, and other forms of native wildlife. It will also provide visitors with new opportunities for hiking and birdwatching. Today the refuge is home to almost 200 species of birds, more than 50 mammal species and 25 species of reptiles and amphibians.

Participants will walk the trails of the refuge, getting an opportunity to hear about the history of the site and the restoration project. The hosts will discuss the project background, stakeholders, and means and methods for restoration of Chicken Creek. Many species of birds, wildlife and native flora are visible from the walking trails.

Equipment and Attire
Walking shoes. Sun protection. Walking will occur on paved paths and may total upwards of 3 miles.
