INS 16 - Remote Sensing of Plant Biodiversity, Physiological Stress and Ecosystem Function in a Rapidly Changing World

In this era of rapid global change, understanding how biological variation at one scale influences emergent properties at the next scale is important for managing the integrity of our living planet. The causes and consequences of biological variation can be studied at any scale using light spectra, which capture the interaction of light with matter to discern biological properties. In this oral session, we bring together a multidisciplinary group of researchers who study variation in plant function across the biological hierarchy from molecules to ecosystems using a range of remote sensing and spectral observations. Speakers will examine how spectral approaches from leaves to ecosystems can be coupled with other established tools across a range of ecological applications, including plant-insect interactions, consequences of interactions among neighbors within forest communities, plant stress under changing climates, and variation in ecosystem functions across landscapes. The session highlights current opportunities for--and challenges to--applying ‘spectral biology’ to address the mechanisms by which processes at one biological scale influence emergent properties at the next scale. The session embraces the ESA theme of ‘ESA for All Ecologists’ by using spectral biology as a point of intersection among biological scales and integration among disciplines.
