Tropical forest biogeochemical responses to global change are likely to have large feedbacks to climate via changes in nutrient availability, uptake, plant and microbial productivity, and greenhouse gas emissions. Excitingly, there is now a critical mass of long-term global change experiments and modeling efforts in tropical forests, but there has been little cross-site comparison and synthesis of how biogeochemical cycles are responding to global change. This session will include speakers from large-scale manipulations and modeling efforts that assess changes in tropical forest biogeochemistry with warming, drying, atmospheric CO2, and changing nutrient status. Speakers are invited to: 1) give brief overviews of biogeochemical responses to global change at their sites; 2) suggest opportunities for cross-site comparisons and collaborations; and 3) explore forefronts in our quest to understand and predict global change effects on tropical forest biogeochemistry.
