Abstract:
ABSTRACT The present study deals with the flora of seven Kuwait islands from nine islands. Warba and Bubiyan are excluded due to the present military situation. A list of 138 flowering plant species (60 perennials and 78 annuals), belonging to 30 families were given. The most common families were Gramineae, Chenopodiaceae, Compositae, and Leguminoseae. Therophytes and chamaephytes are the highest life forms. From the Phytogeographical point of view, the monoregional Saharo-Arabian species constitute (22 %) of the other flora. Species are primarily Saharo-Arabian but in some cases biregional or pluriregional account for (57.2 %). The main Phytogeographical categories come after Saharo-Arabian were Irano-Turanian and Mediterranean.
This study is the first documentation of the flora of Kuwait islands to show what the value of these islands is in the whole flora of Kuwait. These islands constitute about 37 % of the total flora of Kuwait and consequently, consider as the important pool of the native and naturalized species for Kuwait main land. Therefore, the sustainable developments must be taking in the account the conservation of these flowering plants which inhabit in these islands in any future plans. The second point is that, some species were recorded in these islands only and not recorded in the main land, also some species recorded in these islands and in only one locality in Kuwait main land.
