PS 41-133 - Oviposition behavior of the Sericinus montela on Aristolochia contorta under climate change condition

Abstract: Insects that account for a high proportion of species composition can be indirectly affected by changes in plant populations due to climate change. The larvae of Sericinus montela feed on the Aristolochia contorta as the only host plant and have a specific interaction relationship. Accordingly, the reaction of A. contorta to climate change can affect not only the growth of S. montela, but also behaviors related to suitability such as oviposition and food selection. This study aims to determine whether there is a difference in the oviposition behavior of S. montela on A. contorta due to climate change. In July 2022, ten A. contorta grown in the Open Top Chamber (OTC) with CO2 concentration set to 540ppm in the RCP 4.5 climate change scenario and 400ppm in the current natural environment were each selected. VOCs (volatile organic compounds) were collected by PDMS and fixed gases were detected using GC-MS. The concentration ratio of alpha-farnesene, (3E,7E)-4,8,12-Trimethyltrideca-1,3,7,11-tetraene, and alpha-pinene detected from individuals grown under climate change conditions were lower than those of natural environment individuals. Our results suggest that each VOC may not act as a direct chemical cue for host searching of S. montela. Activity of S. montela was random due to each of the VOCs, indicating necessity of research on combinations of VOCs. Therefore, the VOCs will be applied to a septum with a significant difference in concentration ratio, and poles with volatile-emmiting septum will be put into the rearing ground. The oviposition behavior of S. montela according to the climate change condition will be analyzed by comparing the distribution and pattern of S. montela laying eggs under experimental conditions. Understanding the chain effects of environmental factors on biological groups indirectly by identifying the effects of climate change on specific inter-species interactions such as S. montela and A. contorta can preserve biodiversity and predict future changes.
