Beatriz majored in Biology at the University of Maryland, College Park. She completed her Bachelors degree at the University of Maryland, Baltimore County where she also obtained a Masters in Geography and Environmental Science. She is currently pursuing a Ph.D. in Earth Sciences at Johns Hopkins University.
Past research topics have included urban mosquito populations, urban forest tree and vegetation diversity, urban soil quality, urban forest bird diversity, and urban forest patch dynamics. Her current research focuses on the genetic diversity and resilency of urban forests and trees.
Beatriz is committed to doing research in the community, with the community, and for the community. She has a deep love for Baltimore and the resilient and creative residents of this amazing city. She strives to build relationships so that her science can be communicated to the people affected by it. She continues to work with local organizations such as Baltimore Greenspace, Baltimore Socio-Environmental Collaborative, and the Baltimore Ecosystem Study.
