The United Nations Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development (Ocean Decade; 2021- 2030) began in 2021, intended as a global commitment and challenge to bring together partners around the world in support of ocean research and management in support of the Sustainable Development Goals for the 2030 Agenda. Although ocean ecosystems are the largest and most complex systems on the earth, marine and coastal science tends to be significantly underrepresented at ESA. With the current global focus on the Ocean Decade, it is important to identify opportunities for collaboration across disciplines, institutions, sectors, and career stages. As ocean ecosystems and coastal communities continue to change, trained, actionable leaders are needed to guide those changes and support the wellbeing and livelihoods of coastal communities. This session will introduce the work being done by the U.S. Early Career Ocean Professional (ECOP) Node, one of the global ECOP Nodes, as well as the U.S. Ocean Studies Board more broadly. Speakers will highlight opportunities for innovation and collaboration in ocean data generation and application, focusing on both natural and social sciences, from eDNA and machine learning to community engagement and policy development. And across all talks, there will be a focus on both the need for and opportunities to work across disciplines, helping to develop the complex solutions necessary to address intractable ocean challenges.
