The goal of this symposium is to facilitate a broad discussion around equity and human dimensions in ecology research. We aim to identify and celebrate how elevating the human dimension enhances the effectiveness, impact, and equity of ecological research in meeting today’s global environmental challenges. The speakers are the 2022-23 winners of the new ESA program entitled “Excellence in Ecology Scholars”, which was developed to showcase the importance and value of integrating social and ecological research approaches, and of collaborating with community stakeholders and leaders in research design and environmental solution implementation. The 2023 ESA annual meeting theme of “Ecology for All” also promotes the need to make ecology inclusive of diverse perspectives and to train ESA membership to engage meaningfully with diverse communities to meet the needs of environmental problem-solving for today’s global environmental practitioners. Session speakers will discuss lessons learned, best practices, challenges, and opportunities in human dimensions and social science research with a global perspective and an emphasis on principles of equitable and inclusive research.
