Ecosystems along the coast of the Pacific Northwest are experiencing the impacts of climate change. Recent research has documented shifts in patterns of streamflow and temperature of coastal streams that could impact the life history of native fishes, sea level rise threatens estuarine environments and coastal communities, and new invasives species are altering coastal ecosystems. Changes in precipitation and extreme temperature events have begun to have an effect on coastal forests and present new challenges for those managing these systems. Coastal communities that rely on fisheries and shellfish production are concerned about the sustainability of their economic base. Land management in coastal regions occurs in a complex mosaic of private and public land. Thus, ecological research in coastal regions is conducted by a broad range of scientists, including not only academics but also ecologists for local watershed organizations and state or federal agencies. In addition, ecologists have conducted interdisciplinary projects that can help provide guidance for implementation of research into informed land management. The goal of this session is to bring together the perspectives of ecologists across a range of backgrounds and entities to broaden the discussion of the impacts of climate change beyond a single sector. Speakers will explore a range of ways that climate change could affect coastal watersheds from the headwaters to the sea. The question and answer portions of the session will also allow some discussion of ways in which climate change impacts might be manifested in other coastal regions
