The traits of plants control their biotic and abiotic interactions and the ecosystem services they provide and are the primary determinant of terrestrial ecosystem function. Understanding the factors that determine which traits are found in which locations, how those traits may change over time, and the effects those changes will have is thus of critical global importance. To meet these global challenges, we need global data and global participation, both of which are facilitated by an Open Science approach emphasizing the free sharing of data, code, and educational materials. Open Science lowers barriers to participation in research. It is fundamentally necessary for many questions in trait-based ecology: one person or group cannot collect all the data needed. It requires a collaborative effort.
This hybrid oral session consists of presentations highlighting some of the largest ongoing Open Science plant trait efforts globally. The presentations highlight challenges and progress across the data life cycle, including the data collection, aggregation, and sharing stages. We discuss the importance of an Open and inclusive approach to teaching.
