Biodiversity is under increased threat from a changing climate. To document response and discover the underlying mechanisms, data sharing and leveraging across the widest range of sources; that is, from “all ecologists,” is crucial. Inclusion of non-scientists into the praxis of science, including rigorous data collection, allows science to be conducted at temporal and spatial scales that would be impossible for traditional academic scientists acting alone. Public participation in science, variably known as citizen science, community science, and crowdsourcing, invites hundreds, thousands, even hundreds of thousands of people who share interests to participate as a member of the science team. Local experts often understand the ecosystem in ways that scientific experts miss. Allowing for multiple “ways of knowing” can help shape the questions ecologists ask and the ways we ask them, and can lead to a rich, culturally-informed understanding of ecological issues. Engaging community at all levels can demonstrate to the non-scientific audience how science can have dramatic, tangible impacts on environmental health and ecosystem stewardship. Talks in this session will showcase six long-standing programs driven by public participation combined with quantitative ecology to address biodiversity, ecosystem and community health in the face of global forcing.
