Observing species occurrence, abundance and behavior is fundamental to ecology. The majority of taxa are difficult to detect and classify in natural landscapes, leading to a chronic lack of data to support research and policy decisions. While human-based observation has been the dominant form of data collection since the inception of ecology, the future of ecological monitoring is in artificial intelligence combined with traditional observer surveys. This session will provide a broad view of the future of AI, covering data collection from multiple sensor types and habitats. The aim of this session is to build community towards general models for AI ecological monitoring that can be shared across projects, data modalities, taxa, and geography. By building general detectors for the dominant forms of remote monitoring we can democratize the advances made by ecological informatics into tangible gains for all ecologists. Combining work from computer vision research at the intersection of AI and ecology, and applied science at federal agencies, this session will connect the projects that motivate individual research questions with the cross-disciplinary efforts to make general models for species detection, classification and tracking.
