Soil nitrous oxide emissions have been the subject of countless studies due to their major contribution to climate change. Yet our understanding of soil nitrous oxide emissions is stymied by inherently high spatiotemporal variability in emissions, methodological challenges in measuring nitrous oxide production and consumption in soil, and the numerous biotic and abiotic processes that contribute to soil nitrous oxide dynamics. In this session, we highlight the work of early career scientists creatively advancing the frontiers of knowledge about soil nitrous oxide emission across different environmental contexts, from shale bedrock environments to agricultural ecosystems and to post-fire chaparral. The goal of this session is to inspire other ecologists to think outside the box to quantify and investigate controls on soil nitrous oxide emissions in their own study systems.
