This is an exciting moment in the field of plant disease ecology, which has been evolving through the hybridization of two broad scholarly lineages – those focused on managing the destructive impacts of plant pathogens in agriculture and forestry and those drawing from the theory-rich tradition of evolutionary ecology. This organized session brings together plant disease ecologists from across this range of perspectives to explore recent advances in our understanding of plant-pathogen interactions. We will examine how species interactions across scales, from within plants to across plant communities and landscapes, shape the impacts of plant diseases. We will also explore how a mechanistic understanding of plant-pathogen interactions across scales helps us anticipate how global change will drive changes in plant disease. All talks in the session explore antagonistic plant-microbe symbioses, but each presents a different point of view, emphasizing the ecology of microbe-microbe interactions within hosts, the evolution of traits within host populations, the complexity of interacting communities of pathogens and communities of hosts, or the landscape context of host-pathogen interactions. The goal of this session is to highlight the novel and exciting research coming out of the field of plant disease ecology today, and to provide an introduction to this field through six diverse and complementary presentations.
