Aerial remote sensing, including occupied aircraft and unoccupied drones, presents the opportunity to map individual organisms across landscapes with unprecedented resolution and spatial extent. These new technologies raise the question of whether repeat imagery across time periods can replicate traditional field-based demographic measurements, including growth, survival, and reproduction. Such aerial measurements of demography would enable orders of magnitude increase in sample sizes and spatial coverage, relative to labor-intensive field plots. Consequently, aerial remote sensing could promote answers to long-standing questions in plant and animal population ecology, such as how the strength of plant-plant interactions varies across gradients of environmental stress and the importance of population and metapopulation processes for maintaining range limits. However, measuring demography from the air also introduces new challenges. From atmospheric conditions to overtopped plant crowns to sensor limitations, measurement error is an inescapable component of remote sensing. This session will focus on quantitative solutions to extract ecological information on demography from time series of high-resolution imagery, point clouds, or other remote sensing products. We will engage a broad group of ecologists working on these challenges across a range of terrestrial ecosystems, from deserts to forests. Our session will advance the capacity for ecologists to use remote sensing to address fundamental questions in population and community ecology.
