The southwest is a patchy landscape comprising numerous “islands” that support ecological diversity across the region. Some of these islands are small, representing fertile patches underneath shrubs and other vegetation in otherwise harsh and inhospitable environments. Other islands are large, as mountain peaks reach towards the sky in the southern Rocky Mountains along the USA/Mexico border. And other islands are constructed by humans, with urban centers impacting regional temperatures, wildlife corridors, and biogeochemical cycling. In this session, we will explore how “islands” are used in ecological thinking, especially as it relates to the southwest region of the USA.
For this session, speakers will discuss how the theme of “islands” guides their research through case studies and discussion. Islands of interest include: islands of fertility in rangelands, sky islands in the Madrean Archipelago, an urban island represented by the Central Arizona-Phoenix LTER, and islands of data sovereignty. By bringing these ecologists together, we hope to draw parallels between different systems and build bridges. Additionally, this session will showcase the immense diversity present in the Southwest, both with regards to ecological research topics and ecological researchers themselves.
