The sixth and latest Assessment Report (AR6) of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) released in 2022 demonstrated there is robust evidence and high agreement over ways through which Nature-Based Solutions (NBS) can support synergistic climate action to help cities increase their resilience capacity, and particularly for temperature regulation, sanitation and stormwater risk mitigation, coastal flood protection, and water management. However, AR6 also demonstrated that important uncertainty remains around the potential of NBS due to the inconsistency of the current evidence for different types of NBS across global regions.
The aim of NATURA’s 2022-2024 project “Urban NBS Global Roadmap” is to build regional NBS assessments that consolidate the existing evidence and further characterize innovative pathways to leverage opportunities for the mainstreaming of NBS globally. While many ongoing initiatives have analyzed and drawn lessons from the NBS literature and current NBS projects, none of these have conducted comparable global assessment with a focus on urban contexts.
This session will share initial findings on 1) current urban NBS knowledge and gaps based on a bibliometric analysis of the literature conducted at regional level; 2) the analysis of case studies that help navigate regional commonalities and differences, including on the need to develop research on the ecosystems’ resilience itself (as opposed to ecosystems development for societal resilience), as well as to map out the range of actors involved, scales of implementation, and the policy frameworks in place to support the mainstreaming of NBS. The session will start with an introduction to NATURA’s Urban NBS Global Roadmap project and will be followed by five talks focusing on NBS in the context of a specific region. Talks will provide an analysis of the literature, regional assessments of the practice of NBS through case studies, or a combination of both.
