As green roofs become increasingly common in urban environments, researchers and practitioners are reconsidering plant community composition. In addition to the commonly implemented succulent plant community that has dominated green roof design in North America, native species are now also included. Native species trials demonstrate some benefits as well as tradeoffs depending on the size and location of the living roof system.
Although some native herbaceous species can thrive in exposed, hot dry, roof conditions, many cannot persist. A growing body of research utilizes ecological frameworks to further tease apart factors which promote or deter plant success.
The goal of this session is to compare notes on plant community function and associated drivers across climates. Results from the studies in this session will inform future green roof designs and provide valuable information to green roof practitioners and managers. Because session presenters and co-authors represent a variety of professional backgrounds, it fits well with the meeting theme. This topic should also interest any other ESA members who would support applying ecological theory to green roof systems in order to promote plant community functions which support urban biodiversity and managing stormwater through evapotranspiration.
