This session will showcase new ideas and research from indigenous ecologists. Indigenous ecologists will describe the interplay between indigenous ecological knowledge and ecology in their work. Scholars in soil science, wildlife ecology, food sovereignty, ecological planning, and complexity science will explain the contributions and significance of traditional ecological knowledge within each of their research focuses. Traditional ecological knowledge is vast and deep, these scholars will offer glimpses into how traditional ecological knowledge is informing research objectives, methods, and outcomes, and describe implications to ecology and natural resource management. Examples of the applicability of traditional ecological knowledge in protecting biodiversity and supporting climate change mitigation and adaptation will be shared. Experiences and insights from across North America will be described.
