Fungal communities could be a tool for creating multifunctional agricultural landscapes due to their critical role in multiple ecosystem functions, from carbon cycling to plant performance. However, the ambiguity of “who is where” and “what are they doing” of fungi challenges efforts to bolster and sustain diverse fungal communities across landscapes. In agriculture, answering these questions will require an understanding of the socio-ecological mechanisms that drive fungal community assembly in agricultural landscapes and, in turn, the ecosystem functions these fungal communities can provide.
