Global change is driving profound changes to the physical, biotic, and social environment in ways that could have significant implications for the management of plant invasions. Land managers face a growing list of naturalized or invasive plant species, increasingly frequent extreme weather events, high levels of uncertainty, and demand for management solutions that exceeds funding and capacity. Robust, collaborative connections among ecologists, land managers, and policy makers, including indigenous peoples, are key to addressing plant invasions globally. However, a mismatch between research programs and the needs of decision-makers continues to limit the application of ecological research and knowledge to on-the-ground invasive species management. Closing this knowing-doing gap will become increasingly important as global change alters plant invasion dynamics and increases the need for adaptive management in the face of unprecedented environmental changes. Ecologists can play a crucial role to close this gap by working with managers and policy makers to provide the key insights needed to develop effective management strategies for plant invasions now and in the future.
This Inspire session is designed to improve ecological contributions to invasive plant management and decision-making in the face of global change by:
- Considering key themes and practices from examples where integrating input from ecologists, land managers, and policy makers, including collaborations and co-design, led to improvements in invasive plant management;
- Identifying key global changes and trends, and exploring the ways in which they could significantly change plant invasion dynamics and management needs; and
- Discussing development of research agendas that can proactively address plant invasions under global change and help future-proof invasive plant management.
This session highlights successful integration of ecological knowledge into decision-making and management, including via active collaborations between researchers and managers and contributions to development of local, national, and international policies and goals. It emphasizes effective research design that combines user-led questions for applied outcomes with conceptual work that can improve decision-making and management across contexts, while also providing unique opportunities for improving ecological understanding of the causes and consequences of plant invasions.
