We know from decades of research that groups with higher diversity have a greater ability to solve challenges, displaying creativity and innovation. We present an example of two programs that leverage the diversity present in Idaho with cutting-edge research. Vertically Integrated Projects (VIP) and Summer Authentic Research Experience (SARE) are programs that were created to bridge the student-faculty gap and increase undergraduate access to hands-on research experiences. Both programs enable students to develop important skills including experimental design, science communication, and data analysis. This presentation will showcase examples from these two programs from the perspective of a graduate student mentor.
