WK 22 - Building a More Diverse Scientific Community: Research, Training, and Environmental Justice Opportunities in DOE’s Office of Biological and Environmental Research
U.S. Department of Energy, Office of Science, United States
Session Description: The mission of the Department of Energy’s Office of Biological and Environmental Research (BER) is to support transformative science and scientific user facilities to achieve a predictive understanding of complex biological, Earth, and environmental systems for energy and infrastructure security, and independence. To meet this mission, BER provides research support and opportunities to the scientific community, including the DOE National Laboratories. Navigating the federal proposal submission and review can be challenging, particularly for those not experienced with the process, including early career researchers and scientists from disadvantaged or minoritized communities. This workshop is intended to help expand the community of participation in BER research by providing information on funding and collaboration opportunities within BER’s programs and scientific user facilities, particularly the Reaching a New Energy Sciences Workforce (RENEW) initiative, Funding for Accelerated Inclusive Research (FAIR), Climate Resilience Centers, Urban Integrated Field Laboratories, and other DOE activities focused on broadening training, research, and community engagement within the BER portfolio. Additionally, this workshop will explain the merit review process and provide important tips/best practices for submitting research proposals and participating in BER activities. The workshop is open to everyone and BER program managers will be present to answer questions and hear feedback from the community.
