WK 42 - Co-designed Projects in Ecological Research and Practice: Creating and Navigating Successful Opportunities

Session Description: “Co-designed” projects are planned and carried out in cooperation between conservation/management practitioners and academic researchers to achieve real-world impact, with significant contributions from individuals across multiple fields of interest. They are an incredibly successful tool for conservation- and management-oriented ecologists seeking to transform their research into significant real-world applications.

Despite the opportunities and success of such projects, many ecologists within academia and practitioner fields may be unsure as to how best to approach, create and maintain these types of cooperative projects.

This workshop aims to brings together ecologists from all fields to discuss and facilitate future co-designed projects. We will share experiences to enable and encourage best practices for successful projects and outcomes, and give attendees the opportunity to discuss their own projects and connect with potential future collaborators.

There will be joint speaking slots with academic and practitioner ecologists who have worked together on co-designed projects.

To make the workshop interactive, attendees will be asked to submit a research question, dataset, or idea for a potential study to be discussed and developed in collaboration with participating academics and ecological managers

The session will be led by Professors Marc Cadotte (University of Toronto Scarborough) and Holly Jones (Northern Illinois University), and jointly facilitated by the British Ecological Society.
